How I came to Latin

I read Johann Weyer in my youth. Then Apuleius of Madaura, the Platonic philosopher; Aristotle’s Physics; De Civitate Dei; the Opera Varia; the Hermetica; Berossus. Then Bodin, Boehme, Dupotet, Galileo, the Rubáiyát, the Poemandres — and a great deal more, in no order anyone designed.

The through-line, if there is one, is philosophy, theology and theosophy, and everything those disciplines reached for on their way: natural science, medicine, the study of the anima, animal magnetism. Latin was not a subject I took up. It was the door each of those books stood behind, and after thirty years of opening it the language stopped being a door at all.

Latin and Ancient Greek commissions at EnLatin are handled personally. They are not subcontracted or outsourced.
